Kiyoko Takahashi, a junior in a high school engineering program, has become proficient in CAD, 3D modeling, and slicing software. She has learned to use industry standard fabrication tools including a CNC router, 3D printers, and a laser cutter/engraver. She helped plan an upcoming engineering expo, connecting her school with the local community. As a freshman, she lead a design team through digitally designing and fabricating a puzzle cube and storage case. Ms. Takahashi’s most recent project has been creating keychains to sell as a fundraiser for her engineering program and to generate comradery among her peers in many sports, clubs, and organizations at her school. She is also an active member in the engineering program’s maker club, affording her multiple opportunities to maintain and repair 3D printers, to research and experiment with alternative 3D printing plastics, and to broaden her knowledge of digital fabrication techniques and skill sets.
